This app is for those who want to explore the benefits of meditation, but don’t feel like they can sit still or listen to someone else talk. The guided breathing uses simple counting techniques ranging from breathing to help you calm down to breathing to energize!
For those who are ready to explore more traditional meditation, this app provides guided experiences that you can customize with different voices and varying lengths of time. My favorite thing about this app is that they help you focus on different skills such as body scan, loving-kindness, and more!
I use the free workouts on this app to make moving at home fun and simple. With no equipment required, and time spans from 8 to 38 minutes, it’s easy to quiet the excuses my brain creates. Bonus that it’s an AAPI, woman-owned business (just like mine is)!
Books
By: Brené Brown
This book is an encyclopedia for emotions! I recommend it to everyone, but especially see a benefit for parents to expand their emotional lexicon and teach their children to do the same. I especially enjoyed how Dr. Brown categorizes the sections based on “places we go when [we have certain experiences…].”
By: Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey
This book teaches us how to interact with other humans through a trauma-informed lens. It also does a great simplifying the reasons this approach is important in the first place.
By: Taylor Jenkins Reid
I don’t put much stock in favorites, but this is the title I share when asked about my favorite book. I have enjoyed most all of Jenkins Reid’s work, but I especially connected with how Evelyn describes the juxtapositions of her personal and public lives. I am especially a fan of any author who can surprise me with a twist, and I certainly didn’t see this one coming!
Podcasts
My husband and I enjoy this podcast on road trips to strengthen our trivia knowledge and build an appetite! Gastropod looks at food through the lens of science and history, and I’m always fond of looking at a subject from many different angles.
I started listening to this podcast when Dr. Brown launched amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It helped me to create some order in my inner world while my outer world seemed chaotic. As she interviews authors, she creates a treasure trove of resources, most of which I’ve added to my reading list!
Although this show wrapped this year, it’s worth listening to the hosts describe the ”invisible forces that shape human behavior”. Even before I started coaching, I’ve been curious about the research behind our thoughts and beliefs as humans. The hosts pair the science with quirky story-telling that will challenge your assumptions about yourself and other humans!
